"Trump has failed to articulate his war aims clearly and in an inspiring manner. Americans are confused about the reasons for this war, and Trump's messaging style is partly to blame," Downer observes.
Downer also suggests that Trump's reluctance to use ground forces and his focus on oil prices indicate a lack of ruthlessness, a characteristic he believes is essential for successful wartime leadership.
"Trump's hesitation and lack of ruthlessness are concerning. Great war leaders are characterized by their willingness to employ every means necessary to achieve victory. Trump seems to be missing this crucial trait," Downer adds.
Despite his criticism, Downer acknowledges that Trump is the only US president with the courage to confront Iran. However, he warns that Trump is quickly losing the support of the American people and the West due to his handling of the conflict.
"If Trump had spent less time on social media and more time studying the strategies of past leaders, he might have prosecuted this war with greater courage and inspiration. Still, a safer world is in everyone's interest, and America's victory is crucial," Downer concludes.
